RYBS is quoted as discussing this extensively in Pinchas Peli's Al
HaTeshuvah, which was translated into English as On Repentance.

I saw a dvar Torah (could be last year's stuff on VBM - Menachem Liebtag)
that links Kappara and Kopher in the sense of Protection as in the
covering on Noach's Teiva.

It is also the function of the K'tores as a protectivee covering used
by the Kohen Gadol (KG) when entering Kodshei Kodshim on YK...

Kappara might not mean "atonement" so much as a protection from the
negative impacts - iow Onshim.

Here is a way of looking at this:
A Yid sins.
Comes along YK and it is mechaper, in the senese that this Yid is
now insulated from the onesh.
The only way to rid onself of the sin completely, however, is teshuva.

This connection between Kappara and covering/insulation sounds Hirschian -
and I wonder if this idea stems from Hirsch's etymologlical insights.

Re: Rambam, Karaites and the Principles

I haven't seen it, but I saw an article by Gerald Blidstein on this
topic cited in a footnote. It is in Techumim (1988) and IIRC it is called
"Rambam and the Karaites". Anyone have access to it and want to tell us
what he says?

Uncomplicated terutz: The Gra holds the second reason of the BY ayin
shom, therefore mtzad dovor she'b'lev there really would be a Brocho.
Lehoir: Many of the answers don't answer the original question, which is
why dovorim she'b'lev of TT has a Brocho unlike dovorim she'b'lev of
bittul.
