Meshech Chokhmah – VaYeitzei – “… Hashem is present in this place, and I – I did not know!”

There are two ways to approach G-d through His Action. One can admire the G-d of miracles, or the G-d of nature.

The medrash describes Avraham as having discovered G-d through contemplating nature. Science only began when the Greeks looked past their gods at the notion of a Creator, which gave them the expectation that the world has a single design. A number of rishonim even go so far as to wonder why a Perfect Creator would design a system that needs interventions. Rather than seeing miracles as proof of Hashem’s existence, they see them as a challenge to His Perfection and Wisdom that demands explanation.

On the other hand, once we get to the Exodus, humanity gets to relate to the G-d Who intervenes in history. Who has a relationship with us.

G-d as the avos experienced him was Keil Shakkai. The connotations of the Tetragrammaton as a name of Hashem weren’t experienced until Moshe’s generation.

So, what does Yaaqov mean in (Bereishis 28:16):

Yaaqov awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely Hashem is present in this place, and I did not know it!”

Meshekh Chokhma (on the above quoted pasuq):

Other quotes:

Bereishis 28:13:

And Hashem was standing by him and He said, “I am Hashem, the G-d of your father Avraham and the God of Yitzchaq; the ground that you are lying upon I will give to you and to your offspring.

Berakhah Mei’ein Sheva (Friday night davening), c.f. Birkhas Avos (from Shemoneh Esrei):
