Rabbenu Gershom and Rav Hai Gaon

It was the Meharshal (Tshuvat Meharshal) who stated that Rabbenu Gershom
Me'Or haGolah was a disciple of Rav Hai Gaon.

Tosafot and Ashkenaz

There's an interesting Tosafot in Pesachim 40b D'H Aval Asahu that shows
*how* the Baalei Tosafot tried to reconcile certain minhagim: "Anu somchin
al sfarim chitzoniim umanichim gemara shelanu"

Tosafot and Ashkenaz: Addenda

I may have found another Tosafot that tries to reconcile different minhagim:
Tosafot Chullin 47a d"h I' Shafchi "vetov lizaher she'kol divreihem
divrei kabala".

And apropros: both Rashi and Tosafot (d"h U'le'erev asuru Betza 24b)
suddenly give us a "history lesson" on R. Kalonymous of Rome who is a
"baki bechol ha'shas". Is this how they're telling us the old minhag
ashkenaz is valid ??

Subject: Bris Milah

Gershon Dubin <gershon.dubin@juno.com> asked:

>>>Can someone with a CD or more conventional bekius
>>> locate for me the thought that milah is after seven
>>>days so the baby can have the
>>>experience of Shabbos before the Bris?

The main sources are probably Midrash Rabboh
Parshas Emor and Zohar Parshas Korach (page 176).

duchenen

From Shlomo B Abeles <sba@blaze.net.au>
Subject: Duchenen

For a long time, I have been puzzled by the Yehi Rotzon said by the
Tzibur towards
the end of Duchenen: ...Vesitnenu l'Ahavo l'Chen uleChesed.......Keshem
Shenosato
es Yosef ...Besho'oh shehilbisho Oviv Kesones Passim...

The Kesones Pasim was after all, one of the main causes of the jealousy
of Yosef's
brothers and everything that it ultimately caused. Are we really asking
for similar
'Ahavo, Chen v'Chesed'!?

I have since noticed that the Yalkut Hagershuni brings this question -
but does not
answer it.

Maybe someone has heard of a Pshat??

<< My knowledge of Jewish history is poor. Was there a rupture in Jewish
living
during that period? (In Ashkenaz. I'm not sure how to argue that the fall of
Bavel's centrality was the cause.) The Crusades hadn't attacked Jews yet, did
 they? >>

Same here. Are there any good texts on these matters you guys could recommend
to those of us who didn't get to take Dr. Soloveitchick in BRGS?
