Welcoming Guests is Greater

Shabbos 127a:

Rav Yehudah said in the name of Rav, “Welcoming guests is greater than greeting the Divine Presence. “[{Avraham} lifted his eyes, and he saw — behold, three men were standing above him; he saw, he ran to greet them from the opening of his tent, and he bowed toward the ground.] He said, ‘My L-rd, if I found favor in Your ‘Eyes’, please do not leave from upon your servant.’” (Bereishis 18:3)

Maharal ad loc:

Rav Yehudah maintains that hospitality is even greater than receiving the Divine Presence. All this is for the reason we said, that a person is created in the “image” of his Creator. If one receives the “Face” of the Shechinah, that is not the Glory of the Shechinah. “[And He said, ‘You cannot see my ‘Face’; a person] could not see me and live.” (Shemos 33:20).

This is not true of welcoming guests. For he honors the person who when he receives new faces, and cherishes a person when he sees him. He attaches entirely to this “image” of G-d. This is greater than receiving the “Face” of the Shechinah, for there is no attachment to the Shechinah….
